Our chess enrichment program allows students to learn through play, inciting growth in social and cognitive development for all players. Analytical thinking is essential to chess and allows children to weigh consequences of future actions. When students practice recognizing patterns, making predictions, reflecting on actions, and questioning their own decisions, they begin to build a familiarity with strategy. This state of planning is central to problem-solving skills, mathematical and deductive reasoning, and independent thinking. Intentional focus on the game improves a child’s ability to creatively respond while improving confidence as a vigilant and fair player. Chess is not only an incredible supplement to classroom instruction, but it is also a powerful social tool: children can explore the creation and maintenance of competitive and friendly relationships while having fun!
